Commencement Offered Reflections on HSPH History & Next Generation
In his final Commencement remarks as Dean of the Harvard
School of Public Health, Barry R. Bloom reflected on the School's
notable history, contributions to public health, and the privilege of
getting to know the School's students. Dean Bloom addressed the
graduates — numbering more than 480 individuals — faculty, alumni,
friends, and family at the graduation exercises on June 5, 2008, in the
Kresge courtyard.

Four Graduates Honored at HSPH Reunion with Awards of Merit

HSPH alumni gathered for a reunion at the Harvard Club of Boston on
Friday, June 6, 2008, where four former School graduates received
awards of merit. The recipients were Shelia Hoar Zahm, SM ’77, SD ’80,
Anders Seim, MD, MPH ’88, David Sencer, MD, MPH ’58, and John D. Boice,
Jr., SM ’73, SD ’77. The evening featured a keynote address by Harvey
V. Fineberg, president of the Institute of Medicine of the National
Academies and this year's Commencement speaker.
Longwood Campus, Including Grounds, to Be Smoke Free
Harvard Medical School and the School of Dental Medicine will be moving
to an entirely smoke-free campus on March 16, 2009. As a result, the
contiguous campuses of HMS, HSDM, and HSPH, which implemented a similar
policy change in 2003, will be completely smoke free. The announcement
was made by the deans of the three schools on June 16, 2008: Barry R.
Bloom, Dean of HSPH; R. Bruce Donoff, Dean of the HSDM; and Jeffrey
Flier, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
