Former U.S. Surgeon General Satcher Leads by Example
David Satcher, the former U.S. Surgeon General, wove together lessons from his life and professional experience in a
talk at HSPH on March 13 about the importance of communication, teamwork, informed passion,
commitment, and science in public health leadership.
HSPH Students Spend Breaks Helping to Rebuild New Orleans
Ellen Connorton, HSPH student and Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) alumna,
led a group of volunteers to New Orleans during HSPH Spring Break,
March 24 to March 28, to aid the ongoing hurricane/flood recovery
efforts. This is the second trip for Connorton to the Big Easy in 2008.
Kawachi Named Next Chair of SHDH
Ichiro Kawachi has been
named the next chair of the Department of Society, Human Development,
and Health. Kawachi takes over from Lisa Berkman, who was appointed
last fall to direct the Harvard Center for Population and Development
Studies. Dean Barry R. Bloom made the announcement on March 26.
New Director of Sponsored Projects Compliance Aims to Demystify Compliance Process
Eileen Nielsen has joined HSPH in the newly created position of
Director of Sponsored Projects Compliance in the Office of the
Executive Dean for Administration.

UPDATE: NIH Public Access Policy and Harvard Procedures and Resources
As reported in the March 28 issue of HPH NOW, investigators
funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are now required to
submit, or have submitted for them, an electronic version of final,
peer-reviewed manuscripts to NIH's PubMed Central upon acceptance for publication, to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication.
Share and Email Functions Added to Web Pages
Information
Technology has launched a new "Share / Email this page" feature on all
HSPH Publisher-based web sites. Two new icons tagged "Share" and
"Email" now appear at the top right corner of certain web pages. The
feature is only available for web sites that reside in the HSPH
Publisher.
Register for Poster Day
The School's Faculty Council invites HSPH members to participate in the
School's 22nd annual Poster and Exhibit Day, which will be held on
Thursday, May 1, 2008, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Kresge
cafeteria. This event is an opportunity for the HSPH community to learn
more about the research and service activities being carried out at the
School.
